Methods, Theory, and the

Role of the Anthropologist

in Shifting Times

In the last year, we have faced remarkable challenges— a global pandemic that has exacerbated existing social and economic inequities, ongoing public health crises, human rights struggles, and urgent ecological concerns. Humanity’s collective and individual responses to the confluence of these events have brought marked changes in many aspects of our lives. This spring, we call for presentations that address the following question: What is the role of the anthropologist within the context of these shifting times?

We invite you to share your perspectives on how anthropologists’ engagement with theory and/or methods has changed or should change in response to a mutable world. How might we adapt our visions, goals, and approaches to doing anthropology? As applied anthropologists, what can we offer through our work? We also invite students and teachers to present on the ways that the process and experience of education have altered, and to reflect on the future directions of anthropological education. Finally, we encourage presentations addressing the possibilities and impossibilities that shifting times create for working towards beneficial social and cultural change.

Additionally, we welcome scholars, students, researchers, and professionals to attend the conference, participate in our activities, and share their work with our community even if it does not fit the theme of the conference. We are enthusiastic about including presenters from all sub-disciplines of anthropology and from related disciplines, as we feel that interdisciplinary communication and collaboration is deeply valuable and promotes scholarly growth.
